The Silent People is a bizarre sight; roughly a thousand peat-headed characters standing still at the Käpylä field alongside the National Highway 5.

The Silent People was created by dancer and choreographer Reijo Kela in 1988. However, this is not its original location. In the beginning it was in two different locations closer to the center of Suomussalmi, and The Silent People even made a trip to the Senaatintori Market Place in Helsinki in 1994! It has been in its current location since August 1994.

The creator Reijo Kela has been asked about what the meaning of the fascinating art project is, but he refuses to provide any answer – each visitor has to draw their own conclusions.

Join us on an incredible adventure to build world peace. Justin Howard set out on an expedition to the banks of the Oulujoki River to find the legendary Chalice of Poetry to save the world, and to create a cultural tourism route stretching from Kuhmo to Oulu.

Along the way, Justin met a diverse group of people, from artists to historians, and got to experience the unique culture of the river valley region. This six-part video series delves beneath the surface and guides the viewer into the visitor’s inner landscape, where the people, landscapes, and natural beauty of Northern Ostrobothnia and Arctic Lakeland have left an unforgettable impression.

The series explores fundamental questions and reflects on the meaning of life, art, memories, and love. Each episode highlights gems along the river and themes that run throughout the entire series.

The video series is part of the “Oulujoki: A Cultural Tourism Route from the Oulujoki River to the World” project. The main implementer of the project is the Oulu Cultural Events Association, and the co-implementers are the Kerttu Saalasti Institute at the University of Oulu and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences. The project has received EU rural funding from the Northern Finland Vitality Centre.

Mutta mistä löytyy se mystinen malja, jolla sanaa ja runoa hallitaan? Lähde mukaan uskomattomalle seikkailulle maailmanrauhan rakentamiseksi. Chicagolainen ilmakitaransoiton maailmanmestari Justin ”Nordic Thunder” Howard suuntasi tutkimusretkelle Oulujokivarteen löytääkseen legendaarisen sanan ja runon maljan, pelastaakseen maailman ja luodakseen kulttuurimatkailureitin, joka ulottuu Kuhmosta Ouluun saakka.

Justin kohtasi matkallaan kirjavan joukon ihmisiä aina taiteilijoista historioitsijoihin, ja pääsi nauttimaan jokivarren alueen omintakeisesta kulttuurista. Kuusiosaisessa videosarjassa sukelletaan pintaa syvemmälle ja johdatetaan katsoja vierailijan mielenmaisemaan, johon Pohjois-Pohjanmaan ja Kainuun ihmiset, maisemat ja luonnon kauneus ovat tehneet lähtemättömän vaikutuksen. Sarjassa päästään perimmäisten kysymysten äärelle, ja pohditaan muun muassa elämän, taiteen, muistojen ja rakkauden tarkoitusta.

Jokaisessa jaksossa nostetaan esille jokivarren helmiä ja teemoja, jotka kantavat läpi koko sarjan. Seuraavat jaksot julkaistaan 17.8., 19.8., 21.8., 24.8. ja 26.8.

Videosarja on osa Oulun kulttuuritapahtumayhdistyksen Oulujoki – Kulttuurimatkailureitti Oulujoelta maailmalle -hanketta. Hankkeen päätoteuttaja on Oulun Kulttuuritapahtumayhdistys, ja osatoteuttajia Oulun yliopiston Kerttu Saalasti Instituutti  ja Kajaanin ammattikorkeakoulu Oy. Hanke on saanut EU:n maaseuturahoitusta Pohjois-Suomen elinvoimakeskukselta.
