The Northern Opera Company, founded in 2016, works to renew the genre of opera. Situated in a small town of around 9000 inhabitants, the Company is the only experimental opera-theatre in the North of Finland offering high-quality, small-scale performances.

A network of artworks, Sanginkontu art trails, has been created on the banks of the Oulujoki and Sanginjoki rivers and in the nearby forests. In the midst of enchanting nature, you can find works by environmental artists and documentarians, which exude the old cultural heritage of the area with its memories and stories, combined with the artists’ interpretations. Each work has been designed with respect for the spirit of the place, the nature, history and people of the area.

Justinin tutkimusmatka ulottuu Muhokselle ja lopulta Ouluun, missä muinainen vesirituaali johdattaa hänet hänen poikkeuksellisen matkansa viimeiseen osaan. Kun jokainen johtolanka, kohtaaminen ja muisto alkaa loksahtaa paikoilleen, Justin kohtaa kasvokkain vastauksen, jota hän on etsinyt koko ajan.

Vuonna 2016 perustettu Pohjoinen oopperakomppania on Pohjois-Suomen ainoa monitaiteellinen oopperateatteri. Suunnittelemme ja tuotamme kokeellisia oopperateatteriesityksiä ja etsimme uusia näkökulmia ja avauksia, jotka lisäävät keskustelua sekä taiteen lajien että yleisön välillä. Teosten taustalla on usein häiritsevä, kysymyksiä herättävä ajatus, joka toteutuu kokonaistaideteoksen (Gesamtkunstwerk) periaattein.

Oulujoen ja Sanginjoen partaille ja lähimetsiin on syntynyt Sanginkonnun taiderastien verkosto. Lumoavan luonnon keskeltä voit löytää ympäristötaiteilijoiden ja dokumentaristien teoksia, joissa henkii alueen vanha kulttuuriperintö muistoineen ja tarinoineen, yhdistyen taiteilijoiden tulkintoihin. Jokainen teos on suunniteltu paikan henkeä, alueen luontoa, historiaa ja ihmisiä kunnioittaen.

But where can one find that mystical chalice with which to master words and poetry? Join us on an incredible adventure to build world peace. Justin Howard set out on an expedition to the banks of the Oulujoki River to find the legendary Chalice of Poetry to save the world, and to create a cultural tourism route stretching from Kuhmo to Oulu.

Along the way, Justin met a diverse group of people, from artists to historians, and got to experience the unique culture of the river valley region. This six-part video series delves beneath the surface and guides the viewer into the visitor’s inner landscape, where the people, landscapes, and natural beauty of Northern Ostrobothnia and Arctic Lakeland have left an unforgettable impression.

The series explores fundamental questions and reflects on the meaning of life, art, memories, and love. Each episode highlights gems along the river and themes that run throughout the entire series.

The video series is part of the “Oulujoki: A Cultural Tourism Route from the Oulujoki River to the World” project by the Oulu Cultural Events Association. The main implementer of the project is the Oulu Cultural Events Association, and the co-implementers are the Kerttu Saalasti Institute / MicroENTRE at the University of Oulu and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences. The project has received EU rural funding from the Northern Finland Vitality Centre.

Mutta mistä löytyy se mystinen malja, jolla sanaa ja runoa hallitaan? Lähde mukaan uskomattomalle seikkailulle maailmanrauhan rakentamiseksi. Chicagolainen ilmakitaransoiton maailmanmestari Justin ”Nordic Thunder” Howard suuntasi tutkimusretkelle Oulujokivarteen löytääkseen legendaarisen sanan ja runon maljan, pelastaakseen maailman ja luodakseen kulttuurimatkailureitin, joka ulottuu Kuhmosta Ouluun saakka.

Justin kohtasi matkallaan kirjavan joukon ihmisiä aina taiteilijoista historioitsijoihin, ja pääsi nauttimaan jokivarren alueen omintakeisesta kulttuurista. Kuusiosaisessa videosarjassa sukelletaan pintaa syvemmälle ja johdatetaan katsoja vierailijan mielenmaisemaan, johon Pohjois-Pohjanmaan ja Kainuun ihmiset, maisemat ja luonnon kauneus ovat tehneet lähtemättömän vaikutuksen. Sarjassa päästään perimmäisten kysymysten äärelle, ja pohditaan muun muassa elämän, taiteen, muistojen ja rakkauden tarkoitusta.

Jokaisessa jaksossa nostetaan esille jokivarren helmiä ja teemoja, jotka kantavat läpi koko sarjan. Videosarja on osa Oulun kulttuuritapahtumayhdistyksen Oulujoki – Kulttuurimatkailureitti Oulujoelta maailmalle -hanketta. Hankkeen päätoteuttaja on Oulun Kulttuuritapahtumayhdistys, ja osatoteuttajia Oulun yliopiston Kerttu Saalasti Instituutti / MicroENTRE ja Kajaanin ammattikorkeakoulu Oy. Hanke on saanut EU:n maaseuturahoitusta Pohjois-Suomen elinvoimakeskukselta.
